Balfour Beatty VINCI is working with a range of organisations to design and build 90km West Midlands stretch of HS2 - Britain’s new high speed railway.. Our work is essential to enable HS2 trains to travel between London and Birmingham as well as continue their journey up to Manchester. We currently have an exciting opportunity to join our team as a Senior Temporary Works Design Engineer to join the Design & Engineering function.
You will lead the team of engineers providing strong technical support and development of others in support of identifying, designing innovative, engineered, and robust temporary works design solutions.
As part of this, the candidate will carry out the role project engineer working independently for project at different stages of their life cycle acting as their main point of contact for their temporary works requirements.
Your role:
- Working within the sub-lot Temporary Works team, the Senior Temporary Works Designer is responsible for: delivery of co-ordinated and integrated temporary works designs, checks and reviews to meet project requirements
- resolving design and buildability issues relating to construction methods
- providing technical support to the construction teams
- supporting acceptance of the design by the Technical Approval Authority and other stakeholders; supervising and developing other Temporary Works Designers.
Who we're looking for
• Previous experience as a designer of temporary works for infrastructure of suitable scale and complexity.
• Technical understanding of civil engineering structures, materials and construction techniques.
• Ability to conceive and design temporary works using project, national and European design standards.
• Good practical knowledge of BS 5975 and industry guidance (e.g.Temporary Works Forum, CIRIA, BRE).
• Understanding of Network Rail and National Highways technical standards.
• Working knowledge of UK construction legislation, including the Designer and Principal Contractor roles within the CDM 2015 Regulations.
• Academically qualified Civil or Structural Engineer
• Good communication skills, and ability to communicate with and influence technical and non-technical people.
• Ability to manage own workload, manage conflicting demands, assess priorities and plan the delivery of design to meet the programme.
• Ability to manage and develop temporary works designers.
• Disciplined approach to quality assurance and documentation.
• Good digital skills.
• CSCS card.
• SMSTS.
• Understanding of diversity and inclusion.

About Balfour Beatty VINCI
Balfour Beatty VINCI is a long-established joint venture between two powerhouses for the delivery of critical infrastructure across rail, transport and other iconic projects in the UK and beyond. We started working together over 30 years ago to deliver the Channel Tunnel, as members of the TransManche Link consortium. In the Midlands, it is Balfour Beatty VINCI’s role to design and build the route, ready for tracks and signalling to be installed. Our work with HS2 Balfour Beatty VINCI have been awarded a 90km section of the HS2 project from Long Itchington in Warwickshire to the centre of Birmingham and then on to Handsacre in Staffordshire.
Overall, we will be building the following across all our sites:
• 9.3km of viaducts
• 62 overbridges
• 35 cuttings
• 56 culverts
• 62 embankments
• 2 twin bore tunnels and 2 cut and cover tunnels
• 28 underbridges and 11 underpasses
