Balfour Beatty VINCI is working with a range of organisations to design and build 90km West Midlands stretch of HS2 - Britain’s new high speed railway. Our work is essential to enable HS2 trains to travel between London and Birmingham as well as continue their journey up to Manchester. It’s an incredibly exciting time to join us - we’re at peak construction with work really ramping up on a broad range of assets including bridges, tunnels and viaducts. Plus you’d join 9,000 people across 72 nationalities working on this exciting section of HS2 across the region.
We currently have an exciting opportunity to join our team as a Track Construction Contractor’s Responsible Engineer within the Transverse Rail Team. This role will be based on site in Kingsbury, The northernmost site of the West Midlands stretch of HS2 runs from Water Orton to Lichfield. The sites are mainly rural and will link HS2 to the West Coast Mainline track.
Role Responsibilities;
- Input from technical perspective to preparation of sub-contract ITT packages with review of returned tenders to ensure compliance with requirements has been met.
- Review draft designs received from designer for constructability and that the design contains sufficient information that the works can be constructed taking account of safety, quality and environmental issues.
- Provide clear guidance on the intended construction strategy including preferred construction methods and access arrangements to designers in a timely manner.
- Responsible for co-ordinating engineering activity within their discipline from design through construction to test and commission.
- Review and approve Works Package Plans (where delegated by the CEM) and Task Briefings produced by the construction team and ensure these documents take account of all hazards identified, particularly those identified by designers.
- Review and approve Inspection and Test Plans for various aspects of the works ensuring that sufficient detail is included and that hold / witness points have been identified. Ensure that members of the construction team undertake inspections and quality checks necessary in connection with the works.
Experienced required
- Technical / professional engineering qualifications and training records. Preferably Chartered or Incorporated.
- Knowledge and experience in procurement of sub-contractors / suppliers on railway Technical compliance aspects
- Excellent communication and management skills to be able to influence others.
- Understands quality processes through design and construction of civil engineering projects from design through to commissioning / entry into service and handover to client
- Good knowledge of railway civil engineering standards including those for track, and NR/L2/CIV/003.
- Also understanding role and responsibilities of the CEM and CRE in NR/L2/INI/02009 Engineering Management of Projects.
- Understands the roles and responsibilities associated with Temporary Works (as described in BS5975).
- Familiar with the H&S aspects of design and construction (risk assessments).
- Understands their responsibility for appointing adequate competent engineering resources to undertake the works.
- Understanding of interfaces between engineering disciplines involved in the project.
- Understands interfaces between engineering disciplines involved in the project.
- Understands the requirements, roles and responsibilities with regard to CDM & CSM-RA Regulations.
- Monitoring engineering activities regarding competence, safety, environment, cost, programme, information, testing and commissioning

We started working together over 30 years ago to deliver the Channel Tunnel, as members of the TransManche Link consortium. In the Midlands, it is Balfour Beatty VINCI’s role to design and build the route, ready for tracks and signalling to be installed. Our work with HS2 Balfour Beatty VINCI have been awarded a 90km section of the HS2 project from Long Itchington in Warwickshire to the centre of Birmingham and then on to Handsacre in Staffordshire.

• 9.3km of viaducts
• 62 overbridges
• 35 cuttings
• 56 culverts
• 62 embankments
• 2 twin bore tunnels and 2 cut and cover tunnels
• 28 underbridges and 11 underpasses
