Balfour Beatty VINCI is proud to be designing and building a 90KM stretch of the West Midlands section of HS2. We currently have an exciting opportunity to join our team as a Utilities Surveyor within the Utilities team based at Sublot 4 - Curzon Street.

Based in Birmingham city centre. Our flagship site Curzon Street will cover a 5 KM stretch and be the main station for HS2. The site will be responsible for 3 sections Curzon, Saltley and Washwood heath. The work will involve viaducts, underbridges and retaining structures.

Role description:

Embedded in the Sub-Lot Asset Protection Team, the main purpose of the role is to ensure that known services are located and accounted for and the risk of uncharted services is reduced as much as possible.

It also includes a significant involvement in the Permit to Dig system, either as a Permit Approver (main) or as an Authorised Person (secondary), in its implementation, maintenance and compliance.

Other significant tasks included surveys, as build capture, space proofing, support of the remaining sub-lot Utilities Team and a close collaboration within the Protection team in ensuring that all activities on site by any BBV Team and related supply chain working around and near services are compliant with all the BBV & HS2 policies, standards & measures established and agreed with the Statutory Undertakers and none are damaged or compromised, keeping the workforce safe and avoid any loss of services to the public.

Experienced required:

  • SMSTS.
  • Relevant CSCS and EUSR Cards.
  • NVQ Lvl3 or above in Utilities Detection/Mapping or equivalent. 
  • Comprehensive experience in the use of RD8100 or equivalent. 
  • Experience in setting out & as built capture with GPS/Total Stations. 
  • Good knowledge of PAS128 and PAS256.
  • Good computer competence including CAD and specific surveying softwares. 
  • Understanding of Engineering principles. 
  • Comprehensive understanding and experience of a wide range of construction techniques and best practices, specifically regarding utilities detection and surveying.

Balfour Beatty VINCI have been awarded a 90km section of the HS2 project from Long Itchington in Warwickshire to the centre of Birmingham and on to Handsacre in Staffordshire. Overall, we will be building the following across all our sites:

  • 42 viaducts totalling over 11km.
  • 66 overbridges.
  • More than 35 cuttings reaching over 30km.
  • 56 culverts.
  • 66 embankments reaching over 33km.
  • Building four motorway crossings requiring box structures.
  • Six interfaces with the existing rail requiring both dive-under and overbridge structures.
